FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 25, 2008 Daisy is the name given to a puppy abandoned late Friday night in downtown Albany on the curb with the trash. She was left in a small carrier alongside garbage cans left out for evening pickup. A good Samaritan heard her barking, picked her up and brought her to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. Luckily for Daisy, there was a place for her to go. The Society is the only animal shelter in Albany County that is always open to stray and abandoned animals. "We're shocked that anyone could abandon this beautiful baby in the darkness of a cat crate with no food or water," Executive Director Brad Shear said. Daisy, a Jack Russell Terrier, was examined by the Society's veterinarian, who found the year-old puppy to be in good health. "I can't imagine what would have happened to her if someone hadn't come along in time. She might have been mistaken for the evening trash," Shear said. "Abandoning an animal like this is not only sickening, it is illegal," stated Shear. The Humane Society is seeking information that may lead them to the person who abandoned Daisy, in order to pursue charges against them. Daisy will be held for five days before being spayed and made available for adoption this weekend. Prior to adoption, Daisy will be vaccinated and spayed in accordance with Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society's policy; she will also receive a microchip identification before being made available for adoption.
