FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - December 4, 2007 Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society cruelty investigators raided a home in Coeymans where 25 Chihuahuas were being housed in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. After obtaining a search warrant, Coeymans police accompanied the Society's investigators to the home on River Street. The Society had received several reports of animals being kept in deplorable conditions. Upon entering the home, humane investigators discovered the dogs living in filth with no heat or fresh water. "The conditions were terrible for these poor dogs. They were cold and afraid. We are glad that we found out about this when we did," said Brad Shear, Executive Director of the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society. "Three of the dogs are tiny puppies still nursing from their mother. This was no environment for puppies to be raised in," Shear said. Criminal charges for animal cruelty will be filed against the owner of the dogs. According to Coeymans officials, the house does not have a certificate of occupancy because it is unfit for habitation. There have been two fires at the home and the owner is supposed to be there doing repairs, not living there with his dogs. In 2000 the suspect was involved in a similar incident, and was ordered to not have animals at his residence, and to pay $1,000 in restitution. The dogs are currently being housed at the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society's shelter where they have been examined by veterinarians, bathed, and are being cared for. The society is accepting donations for the care of the animals, as well as for its animal cruelty investigation fund. For more information visit their website at www.mohawkhumanesociety.org.
