MENANDS, NY -- The Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society's third annual Feline Fest was a yowling success! From Thursday, July 22 through Sunday, July 26, cats and kittens were available for adoption at half their usual fee. During those four days, 136 felines were adopted into new homes. "We started with an available feline population of 163 on Thursday morning, with another 120 in foster care or being treated," said Executive Director Brad Shear. "By the end of the weekend, the majority of available cats had been adopted. We are very grateful to the people from our community who reached out to give these cats and kittens new homes." "Because of the timing of the breeding season, each summer our shelter is greatly overpopulated with cats," continued Shear. "An event like this ensures we can free up space in our shelter." Saturday featured several community activities, with all proceeds going to benefit the shelter. The rummage sale, food and beverage tent and raffles raised nearly $600. Cats and kittens - as well as dogs and other companion animals - are still available for adoption. "Sadly, there will never be such a thing as an empty animal shelter," said Shear. "We will always have animals that need a home."
