The Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society is filled with cats and kittens. The animal shelter in Menands is currently caring for over 230 felines, 100 of which are in volunteer foster homes. At this time of year the Society's shelter is always taxed to the limit by the overwhelming number of cats and kittens coming through the doors, and this summer is no different. In order to find as many homes as possible for these homeless cats, the Society has announced their third annual Feline Fest. From Thursday, July 23 through Saturday, July 25, the Society will offer feline adoptions at half its usual fees. Adult cats will be available for $35 (down from the normal $75), while kittens can be adopted for $50 (down from the normal $100). The Society will stay open until 8pm on Thursday, July 23rd to give everyone a chance to come in and find their new feline friend. All summer new kittens have been born because too few people have their pets spayed or neutered. "Sometimes we will get twenty or thirty cats a day for several days in a row," said Brad Shear, Executive Director. "Those kinds of numbers put a huge strain on the Humane Society's ability to care for animals and find them homes. We are hoping that many of our orphaned cats will go home with a new loving family." In addition to the adoption discounts, the Society will feature several community activities to benefit programs at the shelter on Saturday, July 25: - A rummage sale
- Food and beverage tent
- Raffles (50/50 and prize drawing)
- Craft table for children
- Face painting
- A Bounce House courtesy of Price Chopper
All proceeds will benefit the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. The Society will be open for adoptions Thursday, July 23 from 10am to 8pm and Friday, July 24 from 10am to 6pm. The Community Day adoptions and events will be Saturday, July 25 from 10am to 5pm. The Society is located at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands.
