Trying to Avoid Cat-astrophy

July 29, 2008

The Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society is calling out to the community for help. Every year during the summer, the Society's kennels begin to fill with animals, especially cats and kittens. The Society is currently caring for over 400 animals -- over 300 of them cats.

"The Society has taken in an average of almost 25 animals a day during the month of July," said Executive Director Brad Shear. "Luckily, we have a wonderful group of foster care volunteers who will take cats into their homes until they are ready to be adopted."

Over 120 of the animals the Society is caring for are in those foster homes right now, but they will eventually have to come back to the Society's Animal Care Center to find homes. "There are more cats and kittens at the Society waiting for those foster homes to open up, but with so few being adopted, we are starting to run short on foster homes."

"We know the poor economy is causing more people to bring pets to the Humane Society," Shear continued. "I am very concerned that the poor economy also means fewer people will be adopting animals."

In order to avoid overcrowding at the Humane Society, all cats and kittens will be available this Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, August 3 for less than half of the normal adoption fee. The normal adoption fee is $75 for cats and $100 for kittens. For those four days, the Society will ask for $35 for adult cats and $50 for kittens. As always, the cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and tested for feline leukemia, and come with 30 days of free pet insurance. The special promotion will be available at the Society's Animal Care Center at 3 Oakland Avenue in Menands, as well as the Society's two adoption centers in the North Greenbush PetSmart and the Glenmont PetSmart.

"Hopefully this promotion will get many of these cats adopted, but reducing the adoption price means less income for the Society," stated Shear. "Our hope is that the community will send in donations to help support this life-saving event."
