Brad Shear and his cat Bastian Albany, NY, March 19, 2007 -- After an extensive nationwide search, the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society has announced new leadership. Bradley Shear of Atlanta Georgia will serve as the shelter's Executive Director effective April 23, 2007. The shelter has been overseen by Interim Executive Director Warren Cox since late last year. Mr. Shear brings with him an impressive background in shelter management, animal care and humane education. He has served as Shelter Manager and Animal Care and Control Manager for the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, Brooklyn Shelter Manager for the New York Center for Animal Care and Control, and most recently as Director of Operations for the Atlanta Humane Society. He is the proud companion of a dog, Timber and two cats, Dash and Bastian. "There is no question that Mr. Shear's experience, skills, training and deep dedication to animal welfare will be tremendous assets to MHRHS," said Kathlene Thiel, President of the Humane Society's Board of Directors. "We are delighted that he has agreed to come onboard. We anticipate a bright future for our organization under his leadership and direction." Mr. Shear has pledged to balance meeting the needs of the public with providing the best possible care and treatment for the thousands of animals housed at the shelter each year. He also feels that a focus on education, an expansion of programs and the cultivation of strong bonds with the community will be key components of success. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of an organization with a long history of protecting animals and serving New York's Capital Region." said Brad Shear. "I was inspired by MHRHS staff, volunteers and board members. Their commitment and passion is truly remarkable. This is a very exciting time for the Society and with the community's support there is no limit to the good work that can be done for the animals in this community." In his new role, Mr. Shear will have many past accomplishments to draw upon, including developing the S.T.A.R. and Tails on Trails programs to provide behavioral training and exercise opportunities for shelter animals, heading the Ending Violence Against People and Pets coalition to help raise awareness about the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence, and as a leader of the Boulder County Animal Response Team to help promote the importance of disaster preparedness planning and training. "I am confident that Mr. Shear will be a highly motivated, energetic and committed leader," said Interim Executive Director Warren Cox. "It has truly been a great pleasure working with the Humane Society's dedicated directors, staff and volunteers over the past few months, but I know that I will be leaving the organization in very capable hands." The Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society is a non-profit organization that has been providing shelter for lost, abused and unwanted animals since 1887. It is the largest animal care facility in the Capital Region, serving the needs of over 9,000 animals each year.
